Spiro accelerates ecosystem rollout with strategic partnership focused on joint research, student development and student adoption of sustainable transportation.

Spiro, Africa’s fastest growing sustainable electric two-wheel mobility ecosystem, and Rwanda-based Mount Kigali University (MKU), a leading East African private university, today announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to accelerate the broad adoption of sustainable two-wheel mobility in the country.

Spiro and MKU are partnering to advance sustainable transportation in Rwanda by bringing affordable e-mobility solutions to students. The collaboration will see Spiro provide electric motorcycles and a battery-swapping station on MKU’s Kigali campus, while also creating pathways for student internships, employment, and access to subsidized e-motorcycles.

“Today marks an important milestone for Mount Kigali University as we formalize this collaboration with Spiro,” said Dr. Martin Kimemia Vice Chancellor of Mount Kigali University. “The donation of these electric motorcycles is not only a generous gesture but also a practical tool that will allow our students to engage directly with sustainable technologies.”

The partnership will co-develop research, knowledge products, and innovation initiatives, while jointly mobilizing resources to scale impact. The two institutions will work together in key areas including:

• Joint research and innovation in EV design, battery optimization, and sustainable materials.
• Internships and career development to align student learning with industry needs.
• Public awareness and adoption of EVs, supporting Rwanda’s climate action and emissions reduction goals.
• Knowledge sharing, through workshops, seminars, and guest lectures on sustainable transport.

The agreement, signed at the university’s campus, underscores a shared commitment to supporting Rwanda’s clean transport agenda and contributing to national climate goals.

The rise of electric vehicles, particularly electric motorcycles, presents an unprecedented opportunity to revolutionize Africa's transportation and energy sector, attracting investment from both private and public sector organisations.
